Rumohra adiantiformis leatherleaf fern, iron fern, leathery shield fern

APPEARANCE : Large fern with deep green firm leaves, deeply dissected. Found in the wild across most of the southern hemisphere, mostly in shaded forests floors and river gullies, or as an epiphyte ie in tree forks.
USE IN: Understory and shade planting in frost-free gardens; indoors in pots. Can also be grown like orchids in tree forks or in hanging baskets. Longlasting foliage for flower arranging.
PLANTING: Plant carefully ensuring the crown of the fern is above the soil line. Remove old fronds to keep plants looking fresh and avoid disease. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Prefers light fertile free draining acid or neutral pH soil. Add perlite if your soil is heavy.
CARE: Protect from frost and keep moist during warm growing periods. Ferns thrive in humid conditions – mist regularly in warm months. Apply a slow release fertiliser during spring and a liquid based fertiliser every 4 weeks during the warmer months, diluted to half the recommended dose. Re-pot every 2 – 3 years to keep soil fresh and full of nutrients. The best time to pot is in the cooler months when the plant is dormant.
